WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

We would like to welcome the following new neighbors:

David Salinas and Audra Benaitis, 4512 Habershaw NW
Max and Berna Vega, 4508 Habershaw NW
Armand and Joanne Allessandrone, 4520 Habershaw NW
The Hutgins Family, 4504 Habershaw NW
Steve and Cheryl Niehoff, 6100 Tallsman NW

In the past, the neighborhood has tried to maintain a current listing of all residents and their telephone numbers. These folks have done a great job and donated a lot of time to get this accomplished. With the influx of new folks, it has been a difficult task. They are in the process of gathering updated information. So if you have not already been contacted, you will be in the near future by someone in the neighborhood. The new listing should be ready for distribution within the very near future. Also, we are going to try and get more information disseminated utilizing email addresses. So, be on the look out and for those who do not have email. They will continue to receive a hard copy of distributed information.

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

At the last Neighborhood Association meeting, Mr. Bill Reuler, Treasurer, gave a treasury report on the status of the money collected to donate to the families supplying water to the entrance flower beds. Since our funding was running low, we asked for contributions. The following families have generously donated:

The Stalheim Family
The Wells Family
The Barker Family
The Moya Family
The Lucas Family
The Gomez Family
The Sargent Family
The Carrillo Family
The Lambers Family
The Coombs Family
The Rogers Family
One anonymous donation

We would like to thank the families who have generously contributed. If you have not and would like to, you can drop off your donations at 4515 Habershaw NW (drop box is located on the porch). The average donation is $10.00. If you pay by check, please make checks payable to Hunters Ridge. Also, if you donated and were not recognized, please let me know so I can get a list together for the next newsletter. Remember, the maintenance of the entrance flower beds has been done on a volunteer basis. Everyone is welcome to help.

WANT TO KNOW

Do you want to know what are the covenants of Hunter’s Ridge? If you don’t have a copy, I will be happy to give out copies. In order to maintain our neighborhood in its original condition, everyone should be aware of the “dos” and “don’ts”. Keep in mind the covenants are for your protection as well as your neighbors. They cover everything from rubbish, storage facilities, additions, to parking vehicles and motor homes.

SPECIAL THANKS

To those who decorated their homes for the holidays....kudos go out to all of you!!!! The neighborhood was beautiful!! There was a lot of time and energy spent on the decorations and they were most appreciated and enjoyed by many....thanks again!!

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE

There have been some questions about people building out-buildings in their back or side yard. The Protective Covenants for Hunter’s Ridge state that “Any prefabricated building of any nature whatsoever, permanent or temporary, attached or detached from a dwelling MUST have prior approval from the Architectural Control Committe before being placed upon or assembled or otherwise maintained on any lot.” These covenants are a recorded document which will run with the land until the year 2020. Every home owner should have been given a copy of the covenants when they purchased their home from either Mock Builders or their private seller.

If you have any questions or wish to be in touch with the president and or the architectural control committee, their names and numbers are listed below.

FLOWER INCIDENT

My husband and I recently returned from a week’s vacation. I was informed by one of our neighbors that she watched from her kitchen window as a group of 3-4 teenage girls (known to attend her daughter’s school) helped themselves to a large number of blooming irises in my front yard. One whole section of irises under our bedroom window is missing all their blooms. It appears that these bold young people plucked iris roots and all. I hope they enjoyed them, but I’m quite sure they did not present these bouquets to each of their mothers.

When this neighbor noted that I was upset about what she had observed, she stated she probably should have come out from her house and told them to stop, but neglected to do so. The neighbor stated she knew that these girls were not from this neighborhood, so “probably would not come around her again”! What a prediction. Somehow, this does not change things or make me feel any better about the incident. Some other neighbors to whom I relayed this story stated they are hesitant to invest in any change of their front yard landscaping, as they do not wish to have their flowers stolen either. Truly a sad commentary, but one that needs to be communicated to this neighborhood. Please submit this article in the next newsletter.

Thanks,

Gus & Judy Corazon

EAT YOUR HEART OUT

by Doris Berg

Restaurant Rancho de Chimayo Chimayo, New Mexico (505) 351-4444

If you would like a nice ride in the country before enjoying a delicious meal, do try the Rancho de Chimayo!! After you go through Sante Fe and turn off to Chimayo, the road narrows and twists and turns through pastoral countryside until you enter the town. About a mile from the small center is this delightful restaurant.

The restaurant is quite large - enough room for parties and weddings and such, but it also has a lovely enclosed patio which seats about 40 or so. This is where we sat on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. There is a full bar and we saw lots of people with giant margaritas. We opted for beer this time and the selection of imported beers is quite good.

Our meal was relatively inexpensive, in the $8 to $10 range for lunch, and I would assume that the evening dinner menu would be a bit higher but not out or reach. Although there are a lot of Mexican dishes on the menu, Bruce opted for fresh trout almondine which was nicely presented and tasted equally as good. I had crab burritos served with black beans on the side, more than enough for a hearty lunch. I managed to take part of it home for the next day. This too was nicely served and tasted great. We did opt for one desert. Flan, which we shared, and that too was very good.

Now that the weather is nice and the summer fever has set in, try a drive out in the country and enjoy this rustic restaurant.

NEIGHBORHOOD SPRING GET-TOGETHER

The next neighborhood get-together is scheduled for Sunday, June 3, at 5:30PM, at the home of Bill & Elsa d’Ellis, 6108 Tallsman Drive NW. It will be a pot-luck, so bring your favorite dish, and share. The food at past gatherings has been…ummmmmm, delicious!

Come and meet some of your new neighbors, catch up on things with each other, and have a chance to express any concerns you might have about the neighborhood.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

“Would the Neighborhood Watch block captains please step forward?”

In view of the above article, and other articles in the last year, it seems that we need to come out of hiding and become much more active in fulfilling our function as block captains. I propose that we meet before or after the Spring Get Together at the d’Ellises to start this process.

Please contact me to verify your attendance at 899-1598. Bill d’Ellis

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP DAY

Scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 8:45AM. Landscaped areas outside the neighborhood wall and parking strip need to be cleared of trash and weeds, and plant pruning needs to be completed. We have been cutting out dead branches and trimming back shrubbery – we hope you can see some results so far. We have also put in more colorful plants, particularly on the Santolina corner. If you can help, please wear sun screen, hat & gloves and bring dandelion diggers, trowels, buckets, trash bags and drinking water. See you there!

WATER WISDOM

DID YOU KNOW.... if you wash only full loads of laundry, your could save up to 6,000 gallons of water each year. (Based upon usage of family of four) If you wash only full loads of dishes, you could save up to 4,300 gallons of water each year. If you turn the water off while brushing your teeth, you could save up 2,000 gallons of water each year. If you turn the water off while shaving, you could save up to 2,000 gallons of water each year. If you take shorter showers, your could save up to 4,500 gallons of water each year.

If you adjust your water schedule each month, you could save up to 12,000 gallons of water each year.

BIG CHANGE

The City’s Counsel revised the Noise Control Ordinance. The revision effects car stereos, barking dogs, outdoor paging systems, lawn mowing and motorcycles. The penalties are: $100.00 for the first offense, $250.00 for the second offense and $500.00 for the third offense. So stereos need to be turned down, dogs can’t bark “persistently and continuously” for longer than ten minutes and no lawn mowing between 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends or holidays.

Food for Thought

These Things I Wish for Each of You by Paul Harvey

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I’d like better. I’d really like for them to know about hand-me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meatloaf sandwiches. My cherished grandson, I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. I hope you have a job by then. It will be good if at least one time you can see a baby calf born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it’s all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he’s scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a Disney movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you’ll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days when you have to catch a ride I hope your driver doesn’t have to drop you two blocks away so you won’t be seen riding with someone as uncool as your mom. If you want a slingshot, I hope your dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use those newfangled computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get razzed by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what Ivory soap tastes like. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I hope you get sick when someone blows cigar smoke in your face. I don’t care if you try beer once, but I hope you don’t like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandpa and go fishing with your uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and the joy of holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through a neighbor’s window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster of Paris mold of your hand. These things I wish for you- tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.
